We dried off the best we could and walked around the corner to the “Just Like Me” play area. I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t see any otters in the first tank. But guess what?? There was one waiting for us in the second tank! They have a slide in this area that allows the kids to zoom down in a clear tunnel right by the playing otters. The girls have done this a few times before – but we didn’t do this today because I can only imagine the uncomfortable ride they would have had being so wet :( We did stop and watch the otter for a few minutes though!

Next the girls pretended to be spiders climbing on a giant web! I’m certain there is a (30 year old) picture of me on this same web! Mom, can you find it?

The goats were our final destination at the Children’s Zoo. The girls picked up their brushes on the way in and went straight to work!

Wrappin’ it up! We thought a little ice cream might be a fun close to a great day! Daddy thought the girls might like to try dip n’ dots. Did you know: Working at the dip n’ dots stand at the Du Quoin State Fair was one of my first paying jobs.

They picked banana split. I think they were a little confused at first with the little dots. ;) Once Abby took a bite she gave it a Thumbs Up!

Hannah’s first eating attempt was with her spoon upside down. She flipped it over and finally got a taste.

But then she quickly chose the “shovel method”.

Followed soon after with the “Drink Method”

Everyone was pretty tuckered out! The girls hopped back in the stroller and we headed for the gate!

And that was our super visit to The St. Louis Zoo!

Hallmark saved me $25!! I have always thought the mall bunny was a bit scary. But not Abby. She’ll hop up there faster than if it were Santa! We had to run to Michaels today. Hallmark is right next door. AND GUESS WHO WAS THERE?!?!

Abby Art

I have kept most of Abby’s assignments/artwork from school. The problem is I have MANY bags collected so far :/ So, I think what I will do  - is each day she brings home something, I’ll take a picture and post it here. Then you get to see it. It is saved forever. And it won’t take up space in my closet ;) Enjoy!

This is K classroom work.

After she does the worksheet, she usually flips it over and gives the letter a shot on the back.

Oh a Lucky Leprechaun!

Abby is in preschool. She gets homework once a week. Sometimes it takes us 10 minutes. Sometimes it takes us a few hours. Her teacher lets her pick 1 of 3 options.

She chose option 1 today. So I grabbed the camera and we got to kicking!

She did super!! Then we measured!

258 inches!!

Of course Hannah wanted a shot at it too :)

We had a little more fun outside — then went in the house so Abby could finish her homework.

My Helpers

It happened again today. I was shopping for some Easter flowers to put in my pots around the yard and Abby and Hannah were being 5 and 3. Not bad. Not loud. Just 5 and 3. I hadn’t had any coffee and I was a little edgy. I think I yelled, “Careful!! That’s not safe!!” for the 20th time — when an older lady smiled at me and said, “You are so fortunate to have two great helpers! All of my helpers have grown up.” Helpers. I’ll bet a random person says something like this to me about once a week. We went on to talk about patio gardens and what we like to plant. It was a lovely adult conversation for this SAHM. ;) Once we got home we started planting. The girls really just wanted to water and that was okay with me. I try to remember to keep “don’t get dirty” and “you might get wet” out of our regular daily conversations. I’m lucky enough to be a SAHM. So they get dirty. So they get wet. Really what else do I have to do that is so important? I quit my job to raise our kids. I am fortunate to have TWO great helpers! Today we’re getting dirty!

I had to run into Michaels for a minute. The girls asked if we could get a project. They decided on decorating some Easter eggs. They started decorating while they were having a nice snack of hummus. :)

Guess which egg belonged to which girl.

And the finished products!

The girls love to sing together. They especially love to be recorded :)

The Cake

Abby asked for “A Super Mario Bros. cake with Luigi in his helicopter suit riding a blue Yoshi.” Hrm. Okay :) I decided I would give the Topsy Turvy cake one more try. It has beaten me twice. I was determined that THIS cake would stand! I loved the cake! The only thing that disappointed me was the buttercream. I pride myself on my buttercream skills – and they just lacked on this cake. Or were just downright awful :/ I had to handle this cake quite a bit to get it stacked. Fondant would have been a better choice. But I love buttercream and so that is what I chose. In the end, the characters were spectacular and the cake stood and it was delicious. Our 5 year old didn’t complain about the botched buttercream — and I’m hoping the party guests were so excited about the characters on the cake that they didn’t notice too much either! Enjoy the pics!
